The Hyderabad Monsoon Regatta 2010
The Monsoon Regatta 2010 was conducted at the Secunderabad Sailing club in Hyderabad from 14th to 18th July. It is one of the most competitive sailing events in the country with world class sailors from all over the country participating. The event was co-sponsored by Marine Solutions. Racing was conducted in two formats, match racing and fleet racing. In Optimist class, over 50 participants competed for the Marine Solutions Optimist Open Trophy. For Match Racing teams, this event opportunity to improve their world rankings as it has been awarded an ISAF Grade 3 world ranking event status (Equivalent to the Chennai open of tennis).
Defending champion Upamanyu Dutta won the Marine Solutions Optimist open Trophy in style with an unbeatable score of 17 points and a race to spare. But like a true sailor, he chose not to take rest on the shore and decided to sail the final race which he won comfortably. On day one, after the first two races Upamanyu was trailing Zephra Currimbhoy of RMYC by one point. But he took the lead very quickly by winning the third and fourth race. Sailing very consistently in the rest of the series he assured himself the top spot with ease. The shifty wind conditions at the Hussain Sagar Lake made the battle for The Marine Solutions Optimist Open trophy even more challenging. Zephra Currimbhoy (RMYC) finished second while KC Ganapathy (TNSA) finished third overall.
R Mahesh of INWTC (Mumbai) won in the Match Racing format while Kaushal Kumar and Girish M of AWSA won in the Hobie 16 class. The prize giving ceremony was conducted at the Marriot Convention Centre. World class sailors like Homi Motivala, Gautama Dutta, Lt.Gen. KS Rao, Rajesh Choudhary, Retd.Commodore. S K Mongia were felicitated for their presence. Also present during the prize giving ceremony was Cdr. Dilip Dhonde, the first Indian to sail solo around the world.
