RBYC Sailing Team Excels In International Waters!

In a 24 hour sailing event which went on nonstop from 2:00 PM Saturday, 10th Oct 2009 until 2:00 PM Sunday, 11th October, Upamanyu Dutta from Royal Bombay Yacht Club won the Gold Medal in Laser Pico class of boats. With just a couple of hours of sleep over the entire 24 hours, Upamanyu Dutta, a Class VII student of Bombay International School and his five member team also comprising of young Diya Correa also from Royal Bombay Yacht Club, finished first with 73 laps in the 24 hours, way ahead of the second team which only finished 58 laps in the same time. Hebe Haven Yacht Club, Hong Kong which conducts this 24 hour Charity Race annually, completed the seventh edition over the weekend.


Upamanyu Dutta has sailing in his veins as he is the son of international yachtsman and Asian medalist Gautama Dutta. Upamanyu has been sailing since he was in his diapers. He won his first National event in 2008 - Optimist National Coastal Sailing Championship in Goa at the tender age of 11. He also was voted the “most promising sailor” in 2008 and there has been no looking back since then. Upamanyu Dutta recently emerged champion in the Optimist Class at the Hyderabad Monsoon Regatta held in August 2009.

The youngster achieved an amazing result at the just concluded Far East Boats Hong Kong Optimist International Championship by finishing 8th in a highly competitive fleet. The event attracted the top ranked Optimist sailors of the world and is the largest sailing event in the Asian territory for sailors under 16 years old. Upamanyu father Gautama Dutta who was present during the regatta said “I have just let Upamanyu follow his own instincts while racing and he seems to be doing well and having a good time.”
